Next week three people from Raseborg, Börje Mattsson, Jan Gröndahl and Maria Söderström will visit the Makana region. Börje and Jan represent Raseborg municipality, while Maria represents UAS Novia.

The preparations for the journey are accelerating as the departure time gets nearer. We’ll leave on Tuesday afternoon for Makana and the planning of the sanitation and waste management projects for the three students that will do their practical training and/or degree thesis on the subject. They are very excited and I think this will be a very interesting project, too.

Now being in Makana, the Finnish delegation has among many other things been shown how the Makana municipality handles it’s sewage treatment and the purification of the drinking water. Not bad systems at all. The problems are found in the rural areas that lack all kind of sanitation facilities. We saw a pilot area on one farm with well functioning dry toilets. In the feasibility study that the Novia students are to undertake, we also look at other and perhaps cheaper alternatives. One important thing would be to get the nutrients in use on the farm without transportations anywhere. The details are to be discussed in the near future.
